Last month on my birthday, we woke up bright and early on a Sunday none the less and shot our first video for <a href="http://popbasic.com/">Popbasic</a>. I'm practically wriggling out of my seat to launch the site and show everyone what we've been up to. The next best thing is showing you a few snaps from the day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This is the opening shot for Popbasic's very first look book video. Fingers crossed we can launch this baby mid next week! My favourite part is the song- it's so catchy...
Once we figure out if people actually like this idea (it would be rather silly to do so beforehand) we'll be busy buying stock for a late August/early September launch.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I attended a Crafternoon yesterday and attempted nail art. I think I need to up my craft game though, it just didn't cut it next to my friend who whipped up a wall feature and started on another pair of Charlotte Olympia-style cat shoes. Coral you're a crafty genius.</div>

<br />
On Friday I was lucky enough to attend the <a href="http://portable.tv/">Portable</a> Presents Susie Bubble event at The Edge, Brisbane. It was so lovely to hear from a fashion blogging veteran. She has been slogging away at <a href="http://stylebubble.typepad.com/">Style Bubble</a> for six years. I have been lurking on her site for around four years, about six months or so before I started Wikifashion.<br />
<br />
It's so motivating to hear about someone who is so humble and just does her trade day in and day out. After being mesmerised by her limoncello coloured skirt, what I gained from her presentation is that if you get out there and engage with your community- offline and on, you will eventually get where you'd like to go.<br />
<br />
Focus, work hard and know what you want to say. It's that simple really.<br />
<br />
And the girl really does love her bubbles, she managed to work the word in at every opportunity.<br />
<br />
If you have the chance, definitely attend the Sydney or Melbourne event.<br />
<br />
Thanks again to the team at Portable for bringing such an amazing person out to Brisbane and congratulations on the launch of <a href="http://svbscription.com/">Svbscription</a>.Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-49016332532385885692012-03-24T13:05:00.002+10:002012-03-24T13:26:10.762+10:00I went to SXSW<span ><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=ri7ozs" target="_blank"><img src="http://i43.tinypic.com/ri7ozs.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></span><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><div><span >The Thursday before last I left for SXSW in Austin, Texas. If you haven't heard of it, it's a huge music, interactive, film and fashion festival that occurs each year. For some reason the organiser asked me to speak on a panel about the future of fashion and technology, I thought why on earth not? </span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span >So I packed my bags and left a few days later. To cut a very long story short, I had a great time and met some awesome people. It was my first time travelling by myself overseas and I was a little bit taken aback by my spontaneity. I'm glad I went, although I will never ever ever fly United ever again. My bags were lost on 5 out of 6 of my flights with them and they smashed open my lock. </span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span >Then when I tried to get home, I missed my flight from SF to Sydney due to the tornadoes in Austin. It was so surreal flying around the storms, in a small jet nonetheless! It was actually really fun and I met a couple of really lovely musicians who were also stranded. Silly me hadn't heard of their band before and when I arrived home I realised that they're actually really well-known. I'm such a dweeb sometimes.</span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span >I had to fly via Auckland and was then told that they hadn't booked my flight back to Australia, oh and they lost my bags again. I swear my cheeky bag must have grew legs and ran around the plane. </span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span ><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=2zeed7s" target="_blank"><img src="http://i42.tinypic.com/2zeed7s.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span >Now for the food....this is what I ate on Sunday at the W Hotel. It was so yummy and definitely goes by the philosophy of everything being bigger in Texas!</span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span ><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=2508pxt" target="_blank"><img src="http://i39.tinypic.com/2508pxt.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span >Yummy mexican vanilla cupcake from Delish! This was a charming little cafe run by a French couple. The queue was so long, but well worth it. I had the Chloe crepes, with sugar, nutella and strawberries. This was my breakfast pre-panel. To say I was nervous was an understatement, although I was so incredibly jet-lagged.</span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span ><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=2uiyes1" target="_blank"><img src="http://i40.tinypic.com/2uiyes1.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></span></div></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span >Poor bike-cab guy had to take me from 3rd to 11th street, up hill. I gave him a huge tip, because I felt so bad. It was slightly terrifying riding on that through Texan traffic though.</span></div><div><span ><br /></span></div><div><span ><i>note: if you've read my last post, you'd know that my engagement ring was damaged. We've since found out that the damage is irreparable. So now we're going to lodge a claim and hopefully be compensated. It's a 200 year old Georgian rose cut diamond cluster ring from a store in the USA, which we chose together on our last trip to the states. Due to the way the diamonds are set and its age, when having it resized it was very important that the jeweler take care not to allow any moisture inside the setting.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I researched jewelers in Brisbane who could cater for this and was advised of a jeweler to use. On the 15th I dropped it into the store and explicitly told them that the ring could not under any circumstances get wet. I simply wanted the band to be resized from a size 6 (US) to a H 1/5 (Aus).</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">They asked me what metal the ring was, I told them it was a 14k gold shank and had silver foil underneath the diamonds which couldn't get wet. I also explained that it was an 200 year old antique Georgian ring from San Francisco, that had foil backed rose cut diamonds. I asked to give them a printed sheet of extra information about the ring, which they said they didn't need as they knew what they were doing and that I could pick it up on the 21st.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I didn't call into the shop until the 23rd, as I had been sick. They said they were about to call me as they ring was not ready yet. During the ring resizing they noticed that the diamond had turned black, so they soaked the entire ring to try to remove this. Even though I had told them the foil behind the settings could not get wet.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">They then said that they almost refused to finish the ring, but went ahead anyway and pulled the middle diamond out, without ever consulting me. They were also confused as to why there were gaps between the diamonds. I had told them the ring was originally a button. They then told me that the middle diamond would need to be reset with claws. I told them I did not want this, but was assured the ring would look exactly the same and that the claws would be completely invisible. I was never ever told that there was a problem with the surrounding diamonds and setting.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">On the 24th I returned to pick up the ring and noticed that the diamond was quite raised they dismissed me and said it looks identical. Upon showing it to my fiance, he was disgusted and we decided to return the next day.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Yesterday we returned to the store to discuss this with them. They denied knowing that the diamonds couldn't get wet and denied that they had filled in between the diamonds with a material. Even though she had previously questioned why there were gaps. They told us to leave the store and that the ring is exactly the same as before. Clearly it is not. There are now disgusting silver claws around my diamond, gunk surrounding the outside diamonds, some of which are now partially covered and some of the filigree on the button has been completely eroded.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">After receiving some fantastic advice from the lovely Vogue girls we are going to pursue every avenue to have this situation rectified. If we can have the ring repaired, we will seek compensation for the damage. However I fail to see how 200 year old filigree can be restored onto a button.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I know that in the scheme of things, I am so lucky to have a lovely fiance. But I think that my last post may have come across as too boastful. Sorry if that was the case, I was simply proud that I'd been published in the NYTimes (and I have no co-workers to share things with). <div><br /></div><div>I think from now on I might not talk about those kinds of things. I've realised this week that I care about it a lot more than anyone else does. <div><br /></div><div>So this weekend I made a pie, here are the results. The crust was revolting and I'm considering binning it or scooping out the custard and eating it straight from the dish. I'm contemplating watching Home and Away (not homesick just really bored). Yesterday was probably the most exciting/fun/incredible day of my entire life. I can't believe I flew into New York for the first time, maneuvered my way through the city alone, met so many cool people who are doing even cooler things and decided that I <i>need</i> to come back here on a more permanent basis. This place is just way too good not to fall in love with it.</div><div><br /></div><div>On my way to a meeting I stopped off at the newly opened Laduree, I was there when it opened at 9am and already the line was out the door. Strangely enough it was my boyfriend who asked if I could drop by, he loves macarons. For a guy that is otherwise very manly with his tastes, I can't help but laugh at this picture when I think of him begging me to buy some for him.</div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-54314846739753573792011-08-03T12:28:00.002+10:002011-08-03T12:36:46.583+10:00New York for one day...<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=2ccmc6q" target="_blank"><img src="http://i56.tinypic.com/2ccmc6q.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">When my boyfriend told me he would be traveling to San Francisco for three days I was a little sad and decided that I should be going too! Although being the founder of a startup doesn't really offer me the luxury of such spur of the moment travel. Lovely C said that he would help me come along too if I made it worthwhile for Wikifashion. Worthwhile I have made it! We're having a meetup in San Fran and over 20 bloggers are attending..I'm suffering from mild (extreme) event planning anxiety.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">We're also meeting up with a lot of cool people there who hopefully can give us some advice about which direction to take the site in.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Last but not least I get to fly to New York for 1.5 days. Yes I'm flying 7 hours there and back for less than two days. I'm a little miffed that my second time in New York will be as short as my first, but I am not going to complain because it's <i>New York</i>. I would be a spoiled little brat if I did that. I hate when people say this, but I can't divulge why I'm going, suffice to say if things pan out I will be able to tell you in September sometime! Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in another visit to Magnolias, TopShop (I missed it last time), Kusmi Tea and Central Park (I didn't visit in April, silly!).</div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-69595855163904867112011-07-17T18:19:00.005+10:002011-07-17T18:32:22.911+10:00I turned a quarter of a century...and a few other things.<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=2sbl4c3" target="_blank"><img src="http://i51.tinypic.com/2sbl4c3.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I had my usual catch up with my lovely friends on Tuesday over tea and decided to splurge and purchase a sticky date pudding instead of a scone. I'd spent an hour threading straws through one another, as I couldn't find lolly pop sticks anywhere...at first the icing was a bit tricky, but I think I got the hang of it. I'm all ears! Weddings, relationships, book club.. what else?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Hope you all have lovely weekends.</i></div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-63313989345893587742011-06-27T17:25:00.002+10:002011-06-27T17:33:50.229+10:00Ellegirl says I put the wiki in fashion?<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=4kdaat" target="_blank"><img src="http://i51.tinypic.com/4kdaat.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Well I certainly don't put the fashion in wiki, that's for sure! The lovely Jaclyn over at Ellegirl was kind enough to interview Coen and I for a feature on their site last week. Being so far away we also organised our own photo shoot. It was a little awkward to say the least, I really didn't like people watching us out in public. I wanted to scream at them, "Yes I'm not crazy, I don' t have any aspirations to be a model. I'm simply a little nerd on the net". <div><br /></div><div>Although our photographer was so awesome and very professional- it was his 30th anniversary as a photographer that day. He also detested green, which made things a little difficult- grass is rather hard to avoid. Although I couldn't stop laughing at the look on his face when he found out about our obnoxiously bright green ute.<br /><div><br /></div><div>If you're interested in reading our little feature, hop on over <a href="http://ellegirl.elle.com/teen-fashion/2011/qa-madeline-veenstra-on-putting-the-wiki-in-fashion/">here</a>.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Sorry again for being such a lousy blogger, I'm a wiki girl at heart I guess? Speaking of Wikifashion, the handsome person in the photo above is hyped up on energy drinks and programming a forum as I type! I'm <i>very </i>excited, I'll actually have people to talk to while I'm wiki-ing it up. </div><div><br /></div><div>It won't just be for fashion though, we'll also be introducing a general section, where you can talk about whatever you'd like. I think I'll even create my own book club. What do you think? </div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-5028738029450311612011-06-05T18:54:00.002+10:002011-06-05T19:03:09.796+10:00Kerbside rat..<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=m73kec" target="_blank"><img src="http://i52.tinypic.com/m73kec.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Excuse the drowned rat appearance, I can assure you I attempted to 'do' my hair before I went out. Though it tends to resume its default bird nest look after about three drinks or so. I believe the look on my face is a result of my boyfriend informing me of the name of my drink- escort. <i>Sacrebleu</i>!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">If you squint really hard, you'll be able to see the dark yellow polish from my previous post. I've decided I do like it. Although it reminds me of McDonalds and everytime I glance at my hands I get a hankering for french fries. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Just in case you're wondering where this photo was taken, it's from <a href="http://www.kerbside.com.au/">Kerbside Bar</a> on Saturday night. If you're in Brisbane you must go. They furnished the bar with seats/couches that they picked up from the footpath. It doesn't sound too appealing, but trust me it's really fun. They even have a swing chair..</div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-90557249993855099152011-05-23T15:39:00.004+10:002011-05-23T15:45:29.532+10:00AA polishes..<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tinypic.com/?ref=211o26p" target="_blank"><img src="http://i54.tinypic.com/211o26p.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here are a few polishes that I grabbed from American Apparel while I was in Vancouver. The darker yellow resembles baby food to me. Although my boyfriend seemed to be rather enamoured with it, so I decided to give it a whirl..</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Sorry for being really lazy with blogging lately. To be honest, I can't do "outfit posts" because I'm back to my usual schedule which involves me sitting for 10 hours a day in front of my computer in my <i>lovely</i> house clothes. You don't want to see this!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Tomorrow I'm joining my local library and need some recommendations for good fiction books. I usually only read non-fiction, so I'm a bit lost as to good fiction reads?</div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646317164598012441.post-91920079492636166002011-05-20T17:10:00.002+10:002011-05-20T17:15:11.381+10:00SS Bacon Bits.<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=2zf3o6g" target="_blank"><img src="http://i52.tinypic.com/2zf3o6g.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>During our five weeks in the USA we drove around in a rather large, 25 foot to be exact! RV. I wasn't very fond of it to begin with. We had no hot water during the Rockies and the smoke alarm gave me an electric shock after it fell off the roof.<div><br /></div><div>But after the first week or so and the boys figuring out what was wrong with the hot water, I grew quite fond of our RV. We quickly named him SS Bacon bits. Why? Because people in the US seemed to be bacon crazy. Every spinach salad had bacon in it, the cocktails had bacon, even the toothpaste. I took photographic evidence to prove this...can anyone explain the bacon obsession in the US? I'm still a little confused.</div>Madeline Veenstrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03270693650749625208noreply@blogger.com5
